Pupils at very early levels of development access a curriculum that enables them to develop a sense of security in the school environment, which is comprehensible and meaningful to them. This curriculum is play based and incorporates the indicators of ‘engagement for learning’ and the ‘Routes For Learning’. The focus is upon enabling pupils to establish positive interactive relationships with others, to proactively explore the world around them, gaining environment control skills and discovering for themselves. All pupils will be given maximum opportunities to achieve the highest level of independence possible. The characteristics of effective learning will be a key part of this strand. Personalised learning must include targets from the child’s EHCP.
